From Makassar, Bali until Manado: The CRC Re-bid Planning Workshop

January 30, 2010, Posted in Activities |

The CRC Re-bid Planning Workshop was held in Manado 25-26 January 2010. There were 25 participants throughout the 2 days from a range of AusIndoBIOCOM partners.

Previous development workshops by Jikti at Bakti headquarters in Makassar in Oct 2009, and AusIndoBIOCOM in Bali, Dec 2009, resulted in five research concentrations being presented for development at the Manado workshop. These concentrations were:

  1. Biosecurity for food security (overarching)
  2. Policy and governance
  3. Culture and local knowledge
  4. Community and enterprise development
  5. Knowledge products

The following diagram summarises these 5 areas:

Research Areas (edit-small)

While still subject to change via CRC Board consideration and approval, the tentative Program areas for the CRC re-bid presently are:

  1. Managing area freedom
  2. Securing food chain integrity
  3. Enhancing biosecurity preparedness
  4. Delivering outputs and outcomes (cross-cutting)
  5. Education and community engagement (cross-cutting)

The purpose of the Manado workshop was fourfold:

  1. To review and develop the existing suggested research work program (in 1 and 2 above) for consideration in the CRC re-bid
  2. To re-work the draft research program in the light of the proposed CRC re-bid program areas (in 3 above)
  3. To synthesize and integrate existing research directions above into the proposed new CRC re-bid Program areas
  4. To develop a set of draft supporting, resourcing, national and international linkages

Workshop outcomes

  1. The five research concentrations in 1 above were confirmed, as well as the relevance of the cross-cutting Linkages Program were confirmed in principal, with discussion occurring as to the importance of emphasising international linkages in such a Program.
  2. Specific research topics under each of the 5 research concentrations were considered, proposed, defended and amended

Research topics from (b) were then located under the appropriate proposed CRC Programs. The table representing the synthesis of outcomes now follows but it will still require additional consultation and amendment over the coming weeks:
