GIS and remote sensing is often represented as complex, expensive and ‘cutting edge’ technology, the province of a techno-elite in developed countries. This book represents an important (unique) set of papers describing the application of such ‘high technology’ as appropriate technology within a remote/regional and developing country context. Geographic information systems (GIS) are now used to visualise and analyse a wide range of data types. The high diversity of GIS applications in eastern Indonesia and Timor Leste is evident in the scope of papers included in this bilingual (English/Indonesian) publication, ranging from land use to health services.
Rohan Fisher is a Research Associate at Charles Darwin University and currently undertaking Masters by Research on forest cover change in west Timor. He has been working on GIS related projects in Nusa Tenggara Timur for over seven years.
Bronwyn Myers is a senior research fellow in Charles Darwin University’s School of Environmental and Life Sciences. She has PhD in Botany from University of Melbourne, a research background in plant ecology and physiology, and ten years experience in projects in eastern Indonesia.
Max Sanam (MSc tropical veterinary science, James Cook University) is the international relations officer of at Nusa Cendana University. His research interests include livestock bussines development and tropical
livestock diseases.
Vincent Tarus (PhD Soil Science, Mississippi State University) is a lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture in Nusa Cendana University teaching soil physics, water management and remote sensing. Over the last five years he has conducted consultancies and research into land suitability mapping and plant/soil water relations in NTT.
